This painting represents how the Windrush generation travelled to Britain to help rebuild after the war and how in the 2018 scandal, through wrongful detainment, denial of legal rights and deportation, their British identity was taken from them.
The flag repairs are made up from colours of different Caribbean flags to signify these people’s contributions to the country and its culture, and the snatching away of the flag reflects the way they were treated. The flag itself appears battered and worn to represent Britain’s post-war state.
